It’s around 300 miles from Cairo to Sharm, popularly known simply as “Sharm” is a well-known port and resort town at the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt, popular with package holiday makers and divers.
Sharm El Sheikh is the administrative hub of Egypt’s South Sinai Governorate, which includes the smaller coastal towns of Dahab and Nuweiba as well as the mountainous interior, St. Catherine and Mount Sinai. The city and holiday resort is a significant center for tourism in Egypt, while also attracting a number of international conferences and diplomatic meetings such as World Youth Forum.
Sharm el-Sheikh is sometimes called the “City of Peace”, referring to the large number of international peace conferences that have been held there.
The southern coast of the Gulf of Aqaba, between Tiran Island and Ras Mohammed National Park, features some of the world’s most amazing underwater scenery. The crystal-clear waters and incredible variety of exotic fish darting in and out of the colorful coral reefs have made this a scuba-diving paradise.
Sharm El Sheikh devoted itself solely to sun-and-sea holidays offering a family-friendly vibe and resort comforts, with world-class diving thrown in.
Many independent travelers prefer the lower-key and more backpacker-friendly town of Dahab.
The Rocky Mountains are parted from the deep-blue sea by a flat desert strip. This combination of desert and sea is an incredible sight and makes you believe you are on a different planet.
The best times to go to Sharm el-Sheikh, for swimming and diving, are the month of April, and from mid-October to mid-November. The summer, from mid-May to September, is actually quite hot, and while the sea is pleasantly warm and you can enjoy long dives, it can be difficult to sunbathe and move outdoors during the day (especially in August and September).
The water temperature is always warm. In winter the stay can be enjoyable, and the temperature is often sufficient for sunbathing.
Sharm el-Sheikh city has been subdivided into five areas, namely Nabq Bay, Ras Nasrani, Naama Bay, Umm Sid, and Sharm El Maya. Together with Hadaba, Montazah and Shark’s Bay,
Na’ama Bay part of the city is the center of nightlife and dining: most of Sharm’s clubs, cafes, restaurants and shops are here.
Nabq is a new area to the North of Na’ama, is on a promontory overlooking the Straits of Tiran at the mouth of the Gulf of Aqaba.
Al Montazah area is a long sandy beach with jetty access to the coral wall.
